"knock knock"
"who's there?"
"It's Ray"
"Oh Hi Ray. Are you here to do the rotavating?"
"Yes."
Contrary to what you may have assumed, the above is not a joke. It's a long-winded way of communicating that Ray is back to do some more tractoring for us.
"Thanks Ray" is the punchline, in case anybody was wondering.
This week, the sentient rain also decided to visit and disrupt the lives of the urbanites, and to start our parsnips. The potatoes didn't need that kind of help. Their weird green hair was already poking into our dimension — a welcome sight. Who knew the unwieldy fuzz of a young tuber could bring such an uplifting feeling. The rain this morning reminds us of a Seamus Heaney poem "Little pleasant splashes, would bring us to our senses, let fall, one by one". The patter on the poly-tunnel sits just beneath the lull of familiar voices, some humming to their rhythmic work, others silently picking greens, or preparing pots for the week ahead.
The poly-tunnel
The poly-tunnel was miraculously transformed on Sunday, volunteers changed bolted greens and last years exhausted crop into the exordium to the coming months of fruitfulness.
Community Harvest Whetstone holds a remarkably unique position in the world. Whilst there are rumblings of food shortages, uncertainty in supply chains, pesticides -- we provide stability and security through home grown vegetables. We don't need "marketing" to share that message, and this isn't a product. It is far more important than that.
Events
Saturday 6th June — Work Party & Open Day
On Saturday, we will be hosting a work party, overseen by Hannah, AND an Open Day, overseen by Caren. The idea is to allow potential new members to meet current ones, and see what Happens in the thick of it at CHW. If you're interested, please see the details below.
Date: Saturday 6th June, 9am – 1pm
Occasion: Party. (Work party.) Wear your best (farming clothes). Dungarees get more points.
9.30am: Farm Tour / Open Day with Caren Wildin for potential new cropsharers.
This has a triple benefit:
1. We look good for the new people.
2. We'll get to meet new prospective members.
3. We'll be a part of staging the field for the changes already moved forward in the polytunnel.
A great opportunity to showcase what we do here and get stuck in with assisting Hannah prep for the summer.
Sunday 14th June — Work Party & AGM
On the 14th June 9am - 1pm Karen Dahlgren will lead a small work party. Please email committee@communityharvest.co.uk to sign up.
That same afternoon, at 2pm, we will hold our AGM. If you have ever considered helping to shape how CHW is run, this is the moment — we would warmly welcome anyone willing to step up to the committee. If you have any questions about what it involves, or any interest at all, please email: committee@communityharvest.co.uk
